Delaware City Refinery-Fire Water Intake Structure Reconstruction – Delaware City, DE

This project entailed demolishing an existing fire water intake structure and installing a new one. All work was subject to adjacent obstructions and occurred under a pump house. The existing structure was sitting on the river bottom encapsulated in mud at 14 feet below the work surface. Most of the work occurred in winter months in ice-laden water. A specialized mini-dredging was employed to remove mud around the existing structure so it could be demolished in sections and removed.

Our Superintendent worked closely with the engineer to design custom formwork that didn’t require stripping. Commerce designed and installed a trolley system to facilitate the installation of new forms under the pump house. Continuous collaboration between the engineer, and our superintendent and crew was paramount to the success of this project.
